Album Review: Calvin Harris' Motion Has It All

ReviewRebecca PotznerComment

This album has been a long time coming: the first single, “Under Control,” featuring Alesso and Hurts, was released over a year ago, and Calvin Harris has continued to tease us throughout the past year, dropping hits like “Summer” and “Blame.” “Motion” features a star-studded cast of collaborators, such as Ellie Goulding, John Newman, and Gwen Stefani, and explores quite the spectrum of dance music.

I’ve been playing the album nonstop since I got my hands on it, and here are some of the highlights.

“Outside” featuring Ellie Goulding
Calvin Harris is often criticized for his “cut-for-radio” dance mixes, but it’s definitely one of his fortes. In his second collab with Ellie Goulding, he packages swinging string and synth orchestrations, fun dance beats, and Ellie’s poppy vocals into an infectious track you can’t help but dance and sing along to.

“Ecstasy” featuring Hurts
“Motion” experiences a serious change of pace with “Ecstasy”: a slow, smooth, and sensual ballad. It’s the perfect track to chill to, or make out to. Take your pick.

“Slow Acid”
An instrumental dance track, Calvin Harris’s tribute to acid house is quite the trip. And the music video is equally as trippy. Rave on to squelchy bass and thumping beats!

Other favorites include “Pray to God,” featuring Haim, “Together,” featuring Gwen Stefani, and “Faith.” Have you listened to the album? What are your faves, and why? Tell us in the comments below!
