The music scene is constantly evolving. Every day musicians across the globe experiment with production software trying to create that innovative sound and spawn a new genre or subgenre which people will go crazy for. The dramatic rise in popularity of social media over the last few years has made it a lot easier for new artists to create an online presence and connect with people helping expand the reach of their music. The other side of the coin is that due to this the competition to be noticed has increased with it, so in the same breath it’s also never been as hard to break it big in the music industry.
Superstars like Laidback Luke, Diplo and Skrillex are constantly trying to further the advancement of the scene by taking new artists under their proverbial wings and guiding them in the ways of production. A lot of the time, if you see big name artists like this shouting about young up-and-coming producers you know you need to keep an eye on them!
That being said, here are 10 up-and-coming artists who are either currently starting out in the industry or already on their way to success but all of whom, I think, will one day be jet setting across the globe and headlining some of the biggest music venues and festivals known.
Hailing from London, DuckworthSound has some of the hardest hitting sounds of the moment right now. Having already had big support from names like Laidback Luke, Dyro, Diplo, Major Lazer, LOUDPVCK and Bingo Players as well as having huge success with his first major release ‘Blow Up’ with D.O.D on Hysteria Records and his official remix of Diplo & GTA’s ‘Boy Oh Boy’ on Mad Decent. People have already started to recognise and go crazy for this guy’s music on dancefloors across the world. With more big releases on the way in August (watch this space…) DWS is definitely one to keep on your radar.
2. Sheni Doko
Sheni Doko is another fresh artist currently blowing up the scene with his hard hitting beats and crazy synths! With Albanian/Macedonian heritage and having grown up for most of his life in New Jersey, Sheni brings this mix of Balkan/Jersian style of recordings to his music to create a unique sound. Before they closed their doors, Sheni held a residency at Pacha NYC and has gained a lot of support from artists such as Laidback Luke, Tommy Trash, Steve Aoki, Dada Life and more. Now part of the Mixmash /Ones to Watch family, Sheni has already had success with hits like ‘Hands Up’, ‘Twitch’ and ‘The Drum’ as well as some huge supporting slots on Laidback Luke’s Super You & Me and Mixmash Label nights across the U.S and most recently a huge set at Electric Forrest. This guy is well on his way to blowing up in a big way!
Type3 is one of the many fine artists coming up at the moment from the sunny city of Viva Las Vegas. By far one of the most talented producers I’ve ever had the privilege of listening to, Type3 has no limit in his production talent and has a great ear for pretty much every genre out there. He’s had a string of releases on some of the biggest labels in the world including ‘Run To You’ a collab with Shelco Garcia x TeenWolf and his cousin Sebastian Knight (originally a member of Type3species and another artist you should definitely check out), ‘Android’ a collab with UKnew (also a great up-and-comer on the LV scene) on Chuckie’s Dirty Dutch and ‘Bruja’ on Brooklyn fire. Type3’s sets compose uniquely of his own catalogue of productions giving the crowd a true Type3 experience and bring a whole new meaning to question “ID?”.
4. First Gift
First Gift is a Swedish born artist and has some of the craziest sounds known to man! He owns his own label Durp Supera, which is used to give up-and-comers a platform to spread their music and energy to the world and has a distinct criteria of uniqueness. First gift has had some huge success already with his own productions such as ‘Hound Dog’ which has been dropped at big festivals such as Ultra, Tomorrowland & Creamfields and ‘DURU’ which recently received a great write up from the guys at NEST HQ. All of this along with some great recognition on his collaborations with artists like Biggs, Perk Pietrek, Lucas Edgar and Retrohandz supported by likes of Skrillex, Diplo, Biggs and DVBBS – this guy is definitely a future headliner!
Another New Jerseyan hitting the list here, Tascione is someone I’ve only recently discovered thanks to Bailo’s promo livestream when he premiered his new track ‘Deeper Love’ on there! Having grown up in a musical family which has performed with some of the biggest names in music, it’s no wonder that Tascione has also shown true musical talent. Creating his own unique style of glitch-hop/trap sounds this guy is most definitely someone you need to be keeping an eye on going forward!
6. Duke & Jones
Representing my hometown of Manchester (U.K), this duo is currently making serious moves in the music industry! Having already had some great successes in their music already including releases on Dim Mak, Dirty Dutch, Riotville and House Party Records, the pair just keep outdoing themselves when it comes to their productions. They’ve had huge support from artists all over including Steve Aoki, Fight Clvb, Wolfpack, Snavs & DJ Juicy M and have lots more planned over the next few months! Again…watch this space!
The main man from Magama is quickly becoming a house hold name in the music business as an MC. Hawkboy has had a string of successes with his bashy tracks, collaborating with the likes of Shelco Garcia x TeenWolf, DuckworthSound, WallStreet, Duke and Jones, Juyen Sebulba and most recently Laidback Luke & Afrojack in their collab ‘Move to The sound’. Hawkboy has just completed another Laidback Luke collaboration, this time with Belgian producer Yves V titled ‘To the beat’ which is the anthem for this year’s Tomorrowland festival. Hawkboy recently launched House Party Records with Shelco Garcia, TeenWolf and WallStreet as another amazing platform for new and talented artists to release their music on and is an extremely dedicated artist to his craft. He has nowhere but up to go in my eyes. Expect big things from him over the next few months!
Originally from NYC and now living in LA, KANDY is one of 2015/2016’s biggest rising stars. He has been named UMF’s biggest breakthrough artist and is still rising on his journey. Having had huge releases on Ones To Watch, Dim Mak, Main Course and Brooklyn Fire, KANDY has received amazing recognition from some of the biggest names in the game – and rightly so! His originality in his productions makes him stand out from the crowd and is inspiring to many new artists starting out. This year, KANDY played his first set at UMF on the 7UP stage, receiving amazing recognition for his performance and will no doubt be playing even bigger in the next year or so. Since Ultra, he has released a handful of originals and remixes along with the announcement of his label, The Cavity Collective.
9. Juyen Sebulba
With huge support in the industry already from artists such as Laidback Luke, Diplo, GTA, Valentino Khan, Boys Noize & more, Juyen is at the top of his game and still ever growing! Having released tracks on Mad Decent and Ones to Watch, this Texan native packs a punch with every track he drops and takes you to another planet everytime! Do not sleep on this guy because you will regret it!
The last item on my list today is one of the loveliest guys in the business who produces some of the nastiest beats (that bass face tho…). Bailo is an Italian-American New Yorker, born and bred in the great NYC and another one already receiving huge recognition from major artists and becoming one in his own right. Bringing a hardstyle trap vibe to his tracks, Bailo can do no wrong with his productions! Having remixed Calvin Harris’ ‘How Deep is your Love’ and released the huge hit ‘Clique’ on Buygore, Bailo is killing the music scene and growing in stature by the day. His new Versace EP is out on 29th July and he is currently heading around the US in a tour of the same name with Buygore. I have no doubt that this guy will be headlining the mainstages at all music festivals across the globe soon!
So, there you have it! That is my list of top 10 artists who you need to keep an eye on before they blast off in the music industry. If I’m being honest, I could have written about 50 more but I said 10, so 10 it is. If you want to keep up to date with the latest artists popping up in the scene yourself, check out the likes of Showcase Mondays, Ones To Watch, House Party Records, Sosumi, Durp Supera, Laidback Luke’s producer forum and the Spinnin Talent pool as these are great supporting outlets for the next big stars!
