When I was in high school in rural Ohio, there were two things to do on the weekends: go to whatever high school sport game was happening, or go to a local show. Where I grew up, the local music scene was completely stacked. Bands such as Twenty One Pilots, Miss May I and This Love all came from that local music scene, among many other top quality bands, some of which are still around today.
For the past few years, that music scene hasn’t been nearly as big. Venues have closed, bands have gotten signed and the scene had drastically shrunk from its former size.
But, there is a resurgence of bands rising again from rural Ohio. One of the new leaders of the scene is Gabe Maas and The Bruins, a piano driven pop/alternative rock band with a unique sound unlike anything else that could be found on your weekly new music playlists.
Gabe Maas and The Bruins formed in early 2014 in the small town of St. Marys, Ohio. Originally a solo project that became a full band with Zach Maas (Guitar), Nathan (Bass) and Chris Albers (Drums), the band has been playing throughout Ohio for the past three years.
The band released their first album “I’m Seeing Dream//I’m Not Asleep” in August of 2015. The album has really become a launching platform Gabe Maas and The Bruins, as they have further formed their sound and lyrical messages. In the summer of 2016, the band released three singles produced by Josey McFaddin (ex-This Love, The Wildskins) that can found on Spotify, iTunes, and Apple Music (the single “Shake” is a personal favorite). With a record planned to release in winter of 2017, Gabe Maas and the Bruins are continuing to be leader in their local music scene, while further expanding their reach with infectious melodies and head bobbing grooves.
