Twist on PR

Putting a twist on music + the professional life

The Glitz, the Glam, the Gassing Cars - Working in Radio Promotions

Young ProfessionalSamantha KalanyComment

I can remember my first day in the office and how incredibly overwhelmed I was feeling. All of the thoughts that were running through my head were so scatterbrained and spastic and parts of me thought I was going to faint. From the prize giveaways, to the remote events, to all of the radio technology and jargon… how was I supposed to become a professional in this right off the bat??

I definitely remember going home and crying to my dogs, as if they could understand my frustration and thoughts. I definitely contemplated quitting because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to catch up with everyone quickly enough, but I am so glad I stuck with it. I have found my family, my home away from home.

Whether I am promoting The Wiz or running around with the Old School guys, I have never felt so welcome in a workplace and I have found my calling in radio. Everyone says radio is dying or radio is dead and that Spotify/Apple Music are where it’s at. Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid Spotify user and Discover Weekly is my best friend, but I will fight for radio’s lifespan.

My main three stations that I tune into are The Project, WNKU, and The Wiz. Though both big and small corporations, I love what these three stations stand for and can always feel a sense of home throughout the three of these stations and love to see what they do to promote Cincinnati and everything in it!

My job as a Promotions Assistant consists of many tasks, from assisting in prize giveaways to daily social media posts to even gassing the cars and making sure all of our Wiz vehicles are the cleanest they can be. I wear many hats.

One of the things I love about music is that it brings people together and serves as an outlet for expression. The Wiz hosts an ongoing promotion where we challenge the Cincinnati area to submit their own music through 513 Heat for a chance to get played on the radio! It’s such an amazing project because I feel we are one of the only stations that are truly for Cincinnati! We are always out on the streets passing out Wiz gear and concert tickets! The Wiz cares.

I have just started my journey as a Promotions Assistant at Radio One Cincinnati, but I am so excited to see where my path leads in this job!
